Corrections log

When Seed Phrase Field Guide gets a fact wrong, we fix it and record it here: the date, the page, what was wrong and what changed. Newest first. How we find and handle mistakes is explained in our editorial policy.

Checked on 25 October 2026.

The log Beginner

Entries dated before 25 October 2026 were made during the review passes in which the guide was written and checked, and are included for completeness.

DatePageWhat was wrongWhat changed
25 October 2026DirectoryThe note under the directory said to suggest corrections "via the contact details on the sources page", but that page has no contact details. The note now points to how corrections work.
25 October 2026Home, FAQ, Sources, site footerWhen visit counting was added, wording that described the site as having no tracking or no analytics became inaccurate. The wording now says the site has no advertising trackers, counts visits with cookieless Cloudflare Web Analytics and uses Google Analytics only after consent, with a link to Cookies & privacy.
24 October 2026Whole siteName change rather than an error: the guide was earlier called "Seed Backup Field Guide", then briefly "Seed Phrase Guide".The name is now Seed Phrase Field Guide, at seedphraseguide.com. Listed here so older references make sense.
24 October 2026Learning pathsThe "All pages by level" table gave levels for the start-here, custody, safety and case-files pages that did not match the level markers on those pages. The table is now generated from each page's own markers.
24 October 2026Decision guideKit price ranges were unchecked estimates, and several were too low for maker-brand metal backups (for example £100–£250 for the first path).Ranges were recalculated from 13 items read from makers' own stores on 24 October 2026, in GBP and USD, with workings shown (for example £103–£198 / $132–$228 for the first path).
24 October 2026Shamir, SLIP-39 & splittingBIP-93 (codex32) was credited to only two of its three authors, and codex32 wallet support was described as "very limited".All three authors are now named, and the page lists current support (COLDCARD, Bitcoin Knots, Sparrow import), with dates.
24 October 2026Shamir, SLIP-39 & splittingThe claim that Trezor backups can be upgraded to multi-share was too broad. It now says only 20-word single-share backups made on firmware 2.7.2 or later can be upgraded; older SLIP-39 and all BIP39 backups need a new wallet and a move of funds.
24 October 2026Safety & scamsIt told UK readers to report fraud to Action Fraud, which was replaced on 4 December 2025.It now gives Report Fraud for England, Wales and Northern Ireland and Police Scotland on 101 for Scotland, and adds the FTC's ReportFraud.ftc.gov for US readers.
24 October 2026Start here, HomeStart here said "most" BIP39 words have a unique four-letter prefix, contradicting the fundamentals page; the home page called the plan "30-minute" and gave out-of-date directory and case-file counts. It now says every English BIP39 word does; the home page says about an hour, matching the plan, and gives current counts.
24 October 2026DirectoryThe Zengo entry said recovery needs a face scan (optional since May 2024), contradicting the comparison page; Argent was listed under an old name; BitBox Steelwallet was listed without noting it appears to be the same product as Steelwallet.Entries corrected: Zengo's face scan is optional, Argent is listed as Argent Vault / Ready, and the Steelwallet overlap is noted.
24 October 2026Several pagesTwo outside links led to a "not found" page or a home page instead of the cited content (the Irish Courts Service probate page and Ledger's genuine-device check). Both now point to the correct pages.
24 October 2026Wallets & devicesThe counterfeit Trezor case was simply dated 2023, and a link about passphrases pointed to a section that did not exist. The case now says "published May 2023; Trezor said the case was over a year old", and the link goes to passphrases.
24 October 2026Physical storageThe threats table gave an unsourced house-fire temperature range, and the melting point of titanium was wrong.Fire temperatures now come from NIST (over 400 °C at the start of flashover, about 1,000 °C during it), and titanium is given as about 1,670 °C (Royal Society of Chemistry).

Recent updates (not corrections)

For context, these recent additions were updates rather than corrections, so they are not in the log above:

  • 25 October 2026: the method comparison has a new matrix of up-front costs, recurring fees, typical failure modes and beginner suitability for each storage method, with maker and provider prices checked on 25 October 2026 and worked totals for nine common set-ups.
  • 25 October 2026: rest-of-the-world estate planning now covers Italy, Portugal, Poland, Sweden and Norway, with tax at death, reserved shares, estate administration, crypto rules and pitfalls checked against official sources on 25 October 2026. An unused authoring template (a hidden "Country name" placeholder) was removed from the page source.
  • 25 October 2026: eight directory entries added (CoolWallet Pro, GridPlus Lattice1, Seedkeeper, OneKey KeyTag, SafePal Cypher Seed Board, Ballet's pre-made key cards, Swan Vault and the Heritage wallet), each with pros, cons, pitfalls, community advice and sources checked on 25 October 2026. The directory now has 177 entries.
  • 25 October 2026: a check of all 856 external source links now the site is live. 16 links that had moved permanently were updated to the same document at its new address (for example GOV.UK, Ledger, Trezor and nidirect pages). Three pages that no longer exist now point to the official replacement (Trezor's firmware 2.7.2 release notes on GitHub) or to a clearly labelled archived copy (Koi Security's FoxyWallet report and Ready's "Argent is now Ready" post). The mygov.scot link for Scottish confirmation now goes to its page on being an executor, because the old address redirected to an unrelated page. The facts these links support were re-checked and none needed correcting.
  • 25 October 2026: a new section on wallets with no seed phrase (passkey smart wallets, MPC wallets with cloud backup and guardian recovery), comparing how each gets you back in, what can lock you out and what it means for heirs, from the makers' own pages checked on 25 October 2026.
  • 25 October 2026: a US section for executors and heirs on the inherited crypto page: RUFADAA requests to custodians, basis under IRC §1014, the Form 706 threshold (checked against the IRS on 25 October 2026), the Form 1040 digital asset question, and a US lawyers-versus-security table.
  • 25 October 2026: five new case files from 2025–2026 on malware and look-alike software that asks for or steals the recovery phrase, and a matching Safety & scams pattern.
  • 25 October 2026: Security advisories 2026 re-checked against the makers' pages: COLDCARD's later firmware and Security Status page, a new Trezor shipping-data breach entry and Ledger's new reseller rules. An external link check of everything added since 24 October found no dead links.
  • 25 October 2026: What the metal seed backup tests actually say, a dated summary of Jameson Lopp's stress tests (75 devices: 45 A, 11 A−, 19 below).
  • 25 October 2026: a per-wallet restore table (formats and default paths) and source-type labels on our sources lists.
  • 25 October 2026: evidence grade badges on key claims and directory entries.
  • 25 October 2026: Security advisories 2026 (COLDCARD, Trezor and Ledger incidents), the About & editorial policy page and this log.
  • 25 October 2026: passphrase pitfalls, the maths of splitting a seed and multisig recovery.
  • 25 October 2026: RUFADAA by state and small-estate limits on the US estate guide.
  • 24 October 2026: Cookies & privacy, and depth added to every guide.
